Grants

Academic Staff

UW-Madison Academic Staff Professional Development Grants are intended to support professional development and/or training to improve the effectiveness of academic staff members in their current roles. The grant can cover up to half of the cost of the development opportunity, with the applicant’s unit covering the remaining portion.

Applications are accepted twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Applications submitted in the spring are for professional development activities that will take place during the immediately following July-December. Applications submitted in the fall are for activities that will occur during the immediately following January-June.


University Staff

Professional Development and Tuition Reimbursement Funds

All members of University Staff (who have completed final probation) are eligible to apply for a grant of up to $1,000 per fiscal year in reimbursement funds.

COE Awards

College of Engineering Academic Staff Awards (application information circulated in the Fall)

The Bollinger Academic Staff Distinguished Achievement Award for Research Excellence. Eligibility: CoE Academic Staff Award Amount: $5,000 Criteria: The winner will be recognized for making important and significant contributions to the research mission of the college, either as an independent investigator or in critical support of a research program.

James G. Woodburn Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Eligibility: CoE Academic Staff. Award Amount: $5,000. Criteria: The winner will be recognized for their contributions towards the instruction of Engineering students.

Ragnar E. Onstad Service to Society Award. Eligibility: CoE Faculty and Academic Staff members with at least a 50% appointment in the College. Award Amount: $5,000 Criteria: The award recognizes and rewards faculty and researchers in the College of Engineering who inspire or demonstrate the use of innovation and engineering principles to benefit humanity.

College of Engineering Academic AND University Staff Awards (application information circulated in the Fall)

University and Academic Staff Distinguished Achievement Award. Eligibility: CoE University and Academic Staff with at least a 50% appointment in the College Award Amount: $5,000.  Criteria: The winner will be recognized for their contributions to the mission of the College. Nominations focused on instruction will generally not be considered for this award, as the Woodburn award is focused on this aspect of our mission.

Inclusive Excellence in Engineering Award. Eligibility: CoE Faculty and Staff members [department chairs, deans, and current members of the College IEDE Committee are not eligible] Award Amount: $5,000. Criteria: Two awards will be provided, one for faculty and one for staff. The winners will be recognized for outstanding accomplishments that advance and enhance inclusive excellence in the College of Engineering. Preference will be given to candidates whose accomplishments have had substantial, measurable, and recent impact on inclusive excellence, and whose efforts and personal commitments to advance inclusive excellence in the College rise above expectations normally associated with their regular job-related duties.

Academic Staff Awards (UW-Wide)

Distinguished Prefix Title

Academic staff who are in their mid to late career may be eligible to apply for a Distinguished Prefix title. The Distinguished Prefix title was created to recognize academic staff who have acquired extensive experience, advanced skills/knowledge, and a reputation beyond their school/college/division. The Distinguished Prefix title is not an automatic promotional step. It is an honor reserved for individuals who have demonstrated remarkable contributions to their profession.   • “When personal or work-related concerns become difficult to manage, UW–Madison’s Employee Assistance Office (EAO) can provide timely solutions for life transitions, physical or emotional health issues, and relationship challenges. EAO professional staff offer counseling and consultation at no cost to UW–Madison faculty, staff, graduate student employees, significant others, and family members.”

Ombuds

  • “The Ombuds Office is a safe place where UW-Madison employees can seek guidance regarding workplace concerns at any time, without fear of reprisal, and at no cost to them. Ombuds provide faculty and staff with a confidential place to collaboratively explore complaints, clarify issues, and consider options and resources to address their concerns. Ombuds are impartial and non-aligned, working to promote fairness in the workplace.”
